Karsh was recognized for capturing the essence of his subject in the instant of his portrait. Karsh used many techniques to make his pictures look very professional. For example, in the portrait titled H.L.Ickes made in gelatin silver print, Karsh used a foodlight located on the right of the picture to give the model's image a beautiful shadow to her left side. The shadow is a light shade, which allows the viewer to see all her features. The light helps her emphazise the not only her dress, her facial features, but also the necklace she is wearing.
